Inspiration & Essentials: Summer Workwear

Happy first official day of summer!

Getting dressed for work is no easy task, especially in this warm weather. As someone who commutes via public transportation (yay DC metro system), I always struggle with putting together an outfit that is both commuter and work friendly.

Here are some ideas and tips on how to stay cool this summer…

  • Layer, layer, layer – Yes, it may be 99 degrees outside but that’s usually not the case in your office right? Wear something that’s appropriate for your commute (i.e. sleeveless top) and bring along a cardigan/blazer to put on as you get into the office.
  • Lay off the cotton – Cotton button downs are the absolute worst to wear when it’s blazing hot outside. Invest in more silk blouses. They’ll keep you cooler and will make your outfit look  more polished.
  • Dress it up – Simple and polished summer dresses are the easiest to throw on. They’re also a perfect outfit for those after work happy hours. I just throw one on in the morning and add a colorful cardigan. Cardigans are a working girls best friend, right?
  • Color – Don’t be afraid to add some color to your workwear outfits. As long as the fit and look of your outfit is professional, you can go color crazy (well to a certain extent). You don’t want to be wearing all black when it’s scorching out anyways.

P.S. I kind of fell in love with Dorothy Perkins dresses as I was putting this post together. They have such a wide array of work appropriate yet stylish dresses. They’re also on the inexpensive side! Check them out here.
